THIS IS ME
Matthias Rueger
Coming from a family of divers, I was fascinated by the underwater world and my parents’ diving stories from a very young age, and I could hardly wait until I was finally able to hold my own diving certification in my hands at the age of 12. Since I grew up in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, far from the ocean, my diving in the early years was limited to vacations.
That changed when I finished school – I then spent a year abroad, where I completed my diving instructor training and worked in the Philippines and Spain.
I got my very first underwater camera in the age of 14, it was an Olympus C-5060. A few years later I could upgrade to a DSLR camera, which opened a box full of new opportunities for underwater photography.
I love showing our planet from unusual perspectives, underwater and from the air. With nearly 80 countries visited so far, I’m especially drawn to abandoned places. Exploring them feels like a lifelong scavenger hunt, where history quietly brings forgotten spaces back to life.
